Book Review: Y: The Last Man: Compendium One

Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man Compendium One (2021)is a story of survival. Some strange malady wipes out every male on the face of the planet. All the species on the planet lost half its population. It’s what Thanos did, but only on Earth. One man, Toric, survived. Well…one man and one monkey survives. He, along with 355, his bodyguard, must find out why they are the only survivors while at the same time try to survive in a terrifying new world.

Ideologies

I read the compendium, so the story structure is a little bit different than you would usually have in a book. And technically, the story is not over yet. But I liked the rhythm it had. Some of the ideas in the story are great, I think it basically has to deal with gender roles in our society. I didn’t agree with everything in the story, but it certainly makes for good topics for discussion. The illustrations do their job. They’re clear and never get in the way of the story.

Final Thoughts

This is one of the most original stories I’ve read in a while. The characters feel real and Yoric, the protagonist, is really funny. If you are looking for a story dealing with the end of the world due to something else other than zombies, then this story is perfect for you.
