Fight the Symptoms Before the Disease
Patrick Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team (2010) is a book explaining the five most common types of dysfunctions teams have as a fable. Lencioni does an awesome job at displaying the problems any team can have in his fable.
I’ve had the chance to work in many teams throughout my life. From middle school to college and beyond. I remember countless of business classes in college when the professor had us split into teams to work in a group project. I had so many flashbacks as the book explained each of the dysfunctions. I could picture the faces of the problematic teammates and the problems they caused for the rest of the group. I wish I had read this book back then; I would have saved myself a bunch of headaches.
So Simple, Yet So Difficult At The Same Time
The book does such an amazing job at explaining the dysfunctions that I thought “Well, that’s simple.” Yes. Everything is simple after it’s explained to you. The fable makes you think you are an expert at team dynamics. But that’s the thing, The principals are easy to identify but difficult to implement. The book explains how a manager can counter attack the dysfunctions as they arise in any organization.
I like the many different personalities types Lencioni profiles in the book. He goes on to explain that just because you might have some if not all of the personalities in your groups it doesn’t mean your team is not going to perform well. He also recommends ways to manage the different personalities.
If you want to become a better leader, I recommend you read this book. The fable he uses to illustrate his points is so engrossing, you don’t notice how much you’re learning. The chapters in this book are short and to the point. Everything in this book is designed to be digested. Please do yourself a favor and read this book.
