Book Review: Star Wars: Old Republic: Annihilation
Drew Karpyshyn’s Star Wars: Old Republic: Annihilation (2012) is about stopping the empire’s most deadly weapon. The whole story takes place 3,650 years before the events of New Hope. Theron Shan is a Republic spy and he has been tasked with destroying the Sith empire’s most destructive weapon, the ship Ascending Spear. The novel takes the reader on an adventure as he tries to carry out his mission.
An Adventure Worthy Of The Star Wars Name
I had really low expectations for this novel before I read it. I mean it had everything going against it in my opinion. The protagonist isn’t a Jedi he doesn’t even have a connection to the force. I thought it was going to be just another boring spy story set in the Star Wars universe. Boy was I wrong. Karpyshyn did a magnificent job with this story. He nailed the pace of the Star Wars story. The first part is slow, but it was only because it was all building to one of the most exciting conclusions I’ve read in a while.
Even though this story does not have any of the original characters, it’s still a fantastic story. The characters jump out of the pages. Their dialogue it’s realistic and the story rhythm is spot-on. I highly recommend this book. Even if you’re not a die-hard Star Wars fan, I think you’ll enjoy this book.
