Book Review: Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Empire Vol. 5

Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Empire Vol. 5. (2019) is a collection of Star Wars comics following Artoo and Threepio. The events in these collection.of stories take place between Episodes III & IV.

Droid Mania

These stories place Artoo and Threepio in the driver’s seat. They are thrown into different adventures and they somehow manage to get themselves out of them. I’m going to say something mean: I don’t care about the droids and to compound things more, the stories don’t have much character development. The droids don’t change and I already know they are going to make it through whatever problem they encounter because they’re alive for episodes IV and beyond. I’m not really invested in their fate.

The illustrations seem childish. I think these comic books were aimed at children. I’m not saying the stories are badly written. Not at all. They’re structurally sound, but the dialogue is too over-the-top. It seems as if they didn’t want the audience to get lost as the story progressed through the panels. This is what made me believe these stories were targeted toward children.

Final Thoughts

I recommend this book only if you love Action and Threepio. The stories are okay, but don’t move the needle in the larger story and they don’t feature the other major characters in a significant way. If this is your cup of tea, you should get this book. If it isn’t, skip it.
