What’s it about?
The 2006 novel Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris tells the origin story of Hannibal Lecter.
The book deals with tragic event early in Hannibal Lecter life that led him to become a cannibalistic serial killer. The book follows Lecter since he was a teenager in Europe during WWII. Harris managed to make me empathize with a serial killer. The man is a master.
This book is a relatively short book. I was amazed at how much story Harris manages to pack into so few pages. It took me a couple of days to get through it.
I wouldn’t call the book gory. Considering the fact that the book talks about a cannibal I was expecting more gore. There was some, but I thought there was just the right amount of gore.
Should You Read This Book?
I recommend this book for anyone who likes a thriller. Thomas Harris is a master storyteller. When I found out the protagonist of the book was Hannibal Lecter, I thought I wasn’t going to like the book. I’m an old-fashioned dude, I like happy endings. I hate it when the bad guys win, but in this book, I was rooting for Hannibal.
I liked this book not only because the story is solid and the characters are believable, but because of the pace of the story. By the time I was finished, I felt like I had read a super long book. There was just so much story in so few pages. At the same time, the story felt complete and the ending did not disappoint.
