Book Review: East of West Vol. 3: There Is No Us

Jonathan Hickman’s East Of West Vol. 3: There Is No Us (2014) is the third compilation of the East Of West comic book series. Death, one of the horsemen of the apocalypse, gets closer to finding what he’s looking for and the world takes one step closer to its end.

Build Up

This compilation is the best one I’ve read in their series yet. The main event the previous book led to is fantastic. I am totally invested in the event in the story. I gotta say though, I’m not connecting to any of the characters yet. I think it’s because none of them have any redeeming qualities. It’s a weird feeling. The other times I’ve gotten this feeling is when watching some of the Godzilla movies. I just don’t understand who I’m supposed to identify.or root for. Godzilla doesn’t talk and all the humans are beholden to him, he acts out of instinct and doesn’t communicate with the ones who help him. I don’t understand the appeal. But then again, I don’t love the franchise anyways.

Final Thoughts

I really liked the story in this book. Hickman did a fantastic job in taking the reader from one story beat to the next. I’m excited about what’s going to happen next in the story. I highly recommend this book.
