When Netflix announced they were going to do the live action Daredevil series I was hyped. At the time, the only other Netflix show I watched was House Of Cards. I loved the show. The combination of Netflix and Marvel was exciting. When the Daredevil show came out, I was blown away. The story was good, the characters were believable and the production was top notch. After the first season of Daredevil was done, I needed to find my next fix of Daredevil, so I turned to comic books.
What’s Shadowland About?
Daredevil Shadowland Omnibus (2018) is a compilation of comic books following a storyline about Daredevil becoming the leader of the Hand. The omnibus packed 43 comic books into one book. It was the perfect antidote to Daredevil fever I needed.
Daredevil is not an all-powerful superhero. His name is Matt Murdock and he is blind. He uses his heightened senses and martial arts training to fight crime in Hell’s Kitchen. There are a couple of villains in this compilation, which is one of the elements I liked about the book. As the story progresses, Daredevil’s main opposing force changes. This gave an insight into Daredevil.
I consider myself an avid book reader and a sporadic comic book fan. Reading comic book compilations is not something I do often. So, keep that in mind when I tell you this: I found the change in art style a little bit jarring. The omnibus was not drawn by a single artist. It took a large number of dedicated artists a considerable amount of time to create each comic book. As I finished one comic book, which told a complete story, and moved to the next section, I found the element of surprise given away too early. I knew I had to get through a couple of expository speech bubbles before getting to the main storyline. Believe me, I understand the need for this. After all, how is a new reader supposed to get caught up to what happens next if they don’t know what happened earlier in the story.
The illustrations are works of art. I like the colors they used and appreciated the emotions the contrasting colors conveyed. I can sense the care, dedication and passion that went into the illustrations. One of the elements that stood out to me was the position of the speech bubbles. The designers placed them in the perfect spot. They never got in the way of the action and I never got lost in the story line.
If you are a Daredevil fan, please get this omnibus. If you’re not a Daredevil fan, please read this omnibus. I think anyone who reads this omnibus will keep on turning the pages to find out what happens at the end. Daredevil’s character arc is incredibly compelling.
