Book Review: Creating Character Arcs Workbook

Test Your Characters

K.M Weiland’s Creating Character Arcs Workbook (2017) is the perfect book to have as reference when writing a novel.

Two Types Of Writers

There are two types of writers in the world. The first type are called Pantsers. The name comes because they write from the seat of their pants. These writers are writing to find out what happens next. They don’t know where the story is going to go. For them writing is a journey of discovery.

The second type of writers are called plotters. Their name comes because they plot every event in their writing. These types of writers construct stories. They know where the story is going to go, they know where the twists are going to happen. For them writing is architecture. This book is perfect for the plotters.

Questions And Answers

This book is a workbook. It was designed to be written on. The book explains the different types of character arcs and encourages to pick one of them to incorporate into your writing. Weiland guides the reader through the process by asking questions. The reader is supposed to answer the questions and in doing so the writer is able to figure out what the character they’ve been writing about might do next.

The workbook refers to Weiland’s previous book. They cover a lot of the same information. I felt I got more out of this book. I think the interactivity aspect of the book made the information stick better in my mind.

Final Thoughts

If you finished your manuscript and are wondering how to make it better, this is the book for you. I know I will refer to it whenever I design my characters.

How do you know what your characters are going to do? Let me know in the comments section.
