Book Review: 27 Fiction Writing Blunders & How Not To Make Them

James Scott Bell’s 27 Fiction Writing Blunders-And How Not To Make Them! (2015) is a fantastic book on writing. James Scott Bell is a bestselling writer. He has been writing for many years and has accumulated a vast volume of knowledge on writing. Throughout the length of his career, he has seen many writers how are starting out make the same mistakes over and over again. He was seeing the same mistakes so many times that he decided to compile them in a book and teach writers how to avoid them.

Editing Tips

This book is an invaluable editing tool. I can’t remember how many times I cringed as I read the examples Bell showed on the book because I had made those mistakes. I had to go back to my manuscript to correct the blunders I committed. Bell takes the time to explain the logic behind every mistake. I am a firm believer that if you explain the reasoning behind an action, people will internalize it and the chances of them making the same mistake again will be very low. The editing tips this book gives are golden. Bell is practically giving writers a shortcut; this shortcut allows any amateur writer who reads this book the advantage of years of accumulated experience.

Final Thoughts

I highly recommend this book. I learned so much from this book. If you read this book, you will be a better writer, a better editor and ultimately a better author. Do yourself a favor and get this book.
